Filipino habits that turn foreigners off

IT'S common knowledge that the Philippines is a poor performer when it comes to attracting tourists to the country, even in the best of times, with or without the threat of terrorism. Perhaps part of the reason is the differences in culture, as there are a number of Filipino habits that are considered rude by American standards.
For example, I've noticed during my 10 years of living in the Philippines that many Filipinos often spit in public. It's done so often that one must assume it's part of the culture. It is also nauseating to see Filipinos hold one side of their nose while they blow the mucous out of the other side. It's also irritating to have cigarette smoke blown in your face, which occurs often (one man told me in a jeepney when I asked him to stop smoking that "it's a Filipino tradition to smoke in public vehicles"). Many Filipino men also urinate in public, and a lot of potential American tourists would not like to have their children see this.
Many Filipinos also cut in on lines (queues) a lot. Whenever I get into a line at a store or elsewhere, I always check to see who's in front of me. If I look the other way and another person cuts in in front of me, I ask him to leave.
It can also be irritating to make phone calls in the Philippines, as many Filipinos have rude telephone manners. For example, they often hang up the phone if they don't immediately understand what you're saying, or they send you to another phone where no one answers it.
The Philippines also isn't a good place for animal lovers to visit. In America, animals are treated with kindness, but in the Philippines animals are treated badly. For example, it can be heartbreaking to see so many hungry kittens roam the streets here.
It's also irritating to hear so many people honk their horns while driving. In America, car horns are used only in critical situations.
Anyway, these irritants can be a deterrent to tourism in the Philippines, since many people return to their countries and talk about what they saw and experienced in the Philippines.
