New Miss Silliman 2006

Gretel Kelly delos Santos
Miss Business Administration
The first thing that you will notice when you meet Gretel de los Santos is her simplicity, especially when you see her around clad in jeans and shirt. Then she smiles, and you think how charmingly beautiful she is. For the rest of the time you are with her, you learn more about what she is made of.
Here is one instance.
“I’m happy. I like nature so I love green. And basically, I can just die for pizza, puto and chocolate,” the 17-year old starts, her eyes and mouth as expressive as she admits it is.
The honor student and debater adds, “Ballads, books, movies, I don’t know. When it comes to duties, I’m dedicated. What else can I say about myself? Well, my parents are a wonderful influence on my life.”
When asked about representing the College of Business Administration, she says, “Most people are actually intimidated when I say my course is accountancy. I just think it’s training for my mind.”
“I’m seeing this pageant as a means to improve myself. After all, Miss Silliman is the embodiment of the teachings of Christian faith. But, you know what? I like the fact that this pageant introduced me to a new set of friends. And we all have a goal to achieve in the end.” (by Nadine Amor)

The movie bound to be the highest grossing Filipino movie this year to date, was actually enjoyable. As a horror movie, it was engaging and scary. Engaging because it draws you to decipher clues and strange happenings while the main characters also try to search for answers to their life’s misfortunes. And, of course, I liked it because it was actually scary. The use of scare tactics, though not very original if seen among Asian horror films, was effective. I also liked how the plot was developed as two seemingly unrelated stories which eventually merged towards the end.
Sukob, true to its namesake, is based on the Filipino superstition that misfortune will come to a married couple and their family if the wedding is held within months of another family member’s death OR if the wedding is held within the year of another sibling’s wedding. The superstition is ridiculous, but we can all suspend disbelief for a moment for this movie. The movie handled the concept well. You might actually start believing in the sukob superstition after watching the film.
Despite a few (forgivable) setbacks, I enjoyed the movie a lot. I enjoy watching horror suspense films and I enjoyed this one. I just saw Piolo Pascual in one of Sukob’s TV promotionals saying that it feels good to scream when everyone else screams with you, ‘di ka (mahihiyang) naririnig sumigaw. True enough.

Antulang Beach Resort, Negros Oriental

If there's one thing we take pride in, it's the beaches of Antulang. White and pristine against the beckoning turquoise-blue seas, few guests have resisted its allure. Take a walk down a winding staircase from your cottage on the cliff and stroll along the shell-cluttered, secluded beach as you welcome the sunrise. And keep an eye on the water, you just might see a jumping sailfish or a glimpse of a resident spinner dolphin!

In Dumaguete, Philippines....Minor hacks employer

A businessman is now in critical condition after he was hacked by his employee Thursday afternoon at his residence in Barangay Bagacay, Dumaguete City, Philippines.
The victim, Wilson Lao, was axed thrice in the head by his 15-year-old house helper, whose name is withheld by the DAILY STAR while he was resting in his sala about 2 p.m.
Up to press time yesterday, the victim was still in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Holy Child Hospital in Dumaguete.
Police investigators said they are in a quandary whether to detain or file charges against the suspect because they are barred from filing appropriate charges against the youthful offender due to the Juvenile Delinquency Act recently signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The 15-year-old suspect, who is from Sitio Lo-oc, Barangay Giligaon, Siaton, Oriental Negros told the DAILY STAR, he axed Lao for scolding him many times and everytime he commits minor mistakes.
The offender narrated he saw and witnessed how his parents were murdered while at the age of 7, by their neighbor, Cresin Maribao.
Maribao was also stabbed dead by his elder brother, Ranny, two years ago, he said.
He said that incident came to his mind when he axed his employer Thursday, but, he showed remorse afterwards.
The house helper also complained he had so many chores to do in the house and in the store of Lao, as well as about the food he eats.
The boy had been barely a week old as a househelp in the residence of the businessman. The youngest among 10 brothers and three sisters, he had to stop schooling at Grade 6 at the Felipe Tayko Memorial School in Siaton
